Steak n Shake Patriot Milkshake

There’s something truly special about recreating a beloved treat from a favorite restaurant right in your own kitchen. I remember the excitement of my first visit to Steak ‘n Shake and how their Patriot Milkshake stood out, not only for its vibrant layers of color but for the delicious memories it created

What Is Steak n Shake Patriot Milkshake?

The Steak ’n Shake “Patriot Milkshake” is a limited-time, patriotic-themed milkshake promo they’ve been advertising for $2.50 (notably cheaper than their usual shakes) as a nod to the U.S. 250th anniversary (2026).

Ingredients For The Steak ‘n Shake Patriot Milkshake:

  • Vanilla ice cream: 3 cups (the classic creamy base)
  • Milk: 1/2 cup (whole milk works best for richness)
  • Strawberry syrup: 1/4 cup (for that vibrant red layer)
  • Blueberry syrup: 1/4 cup (for the patriotic blue)
  • Whipped cream: for topping
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles: to garnish
  • Fresh strawberries and blueberries: for extra flavor and decoration (optional)

Instructions:

Prep For Blending:

  1. Start with a chilled blender jar to help keep everything nice and cold.
  2. Set out three bowls for mixing each colored layer.

Make The Red Layer:

  1. Add 1 cup of vanilla ice cream and about 2 tablespoons of strawberry syrup into your blender with about 2 tablespoons of milk.
  2. Blend until smooth and evenly colored.
  3. Pour this mixture into the bottom of your tall glass and freeze for 10–15 minutes to set this layer.

Make The White Layer:

  1. In a clean bowl or blender, combine 1 cup of vanilla ice cream and about 2 tablespoons of milk (no syrup here).
  2. Blend to a smooth, creamy consistency.
  3. Gently pour or spoon this white mixture over the set red layer. Ideally, use the back of a spoon to keep the layers from mixing.
  4. Pop the glass back in the freezer for another 10 minutes.

Make The Blue Layer:

  1. For the final layer, blend 1 cup of vanilla ice cream, 2 tablespoons of blueberry syrup, and the remaining 2 tablespoons of milk.
  2. Blend until you have a vibrant blue.
  3. Add as your top layer and return to the freezer to set while you prep the toppings.

Finish With Flair:

  1. Once the blue layer is slightly set, crown your milkshake with a swirl of whipped cream.
  2. Sprinkle generously with red, white, and blue sprinkles.
  3. Garnish with fresh fruit if you like.

Tips For A Perfect Steak n Shake Patriot Milkshake:

  • Chill your serving glasses to help set the layers quickly and keep your milkshake cold.
  • For vivid colors, use quality syrups or blitz up fresh or frozen berries with a spoonful of sugar and strain the mixture.
  • Layer carefully. Pour slowly and use a spoon to maintain those distinctive stripes.
  • Use a thick, creamy ice cream for richer layers and a shake with classic Steak ‘n Shake texture.
  • Get creative with the toppings. Mini flags, star-shaped sprinkles, or festive straws take your presentation to the next level.

What To Serve Steak n Shake Patriot Milkshake With

  • Classic Steakburgers: There’s no better match for a milkshake than a juicy Steakburger. Cook up your favorite burger patties, beef, turkey, or even a plant-based option. Layer on lettuce, tomato, pickles, and a slice of melty American cheese. Serve on a soft bun and set out ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise for dipping and spreading.
  • Crispy French Fries: Nothing says comfort food like a side of fresh, hot fries. Go for shoestring fries to capture the Steak ‘n Shake spirit. I love to season mine with a touch of sea salt and maybe a sprinkle of paprika. Dipping fries into your patriotic milkshake is a classic move that feels playful and delicious!
  • Chicken Fingers or Tenders: Golden, crunchy chicken tenders create a fun, kid-friendly meal. Offer a variety of dipping sauces, barbecue, honey mustard, or ranch for extra flavor. These finger foods are great for parties or casual get-togethers.
  • Onion Rings: Thick-cut, crispy onion rings feel special and make a perfect complement to both burgers and your sweet milkshake. The crunchy outside and tender center add great texture to your meal.
  • Chili Cheese Dogs: A nod to diner classics, chili cheese dogs are hearty and satisfying. Spoon warm chili over grilled hot dogs, top with shredded cheddar cheese, and serve on toasted buns. This dish easily pairs with the incredible sweetness of your milkshake.
  • Grilled Cheese Sandwich: For a simple, nostalgic touch, prepare buttery grilled cheese sandwiches. Kids and adults both appreciate the gooey, crispy comfort of this diner staple.
  • Fresh Fruit Salad: A vibrant fruit salad brings some light, fresh flavors to the table. Strawberries, blueberries, and sliced bananas keep with the Patriot Milkshake’s theme and add a refreshing note to your meal.

Substitute Ingredients:

Ice Cream Substitutes:

  • Non-dairy ice cream: Almond, coconut, cashew, or oat milk-based ice creams provide a creamy base for those preferring plant-based options or avoiding dairy.
  • Frozen yogurt: Adds a slight tang and can be found in various flavors—vanilla or even strawberry can work well.
  • Reduced sugar or light ice cream: If watching sugar or calories, these versions still blend smoothly and maintain flavor.

Milk Alternatives:

  • Plant-based milks: Almond, soy, oat, cashew, and coconut milk all blend smoothly and taste great. Choose unsweetened or original flavors for the right consistency.
  • Lactose-free milk: Ideal for lactose intolerance while keeping the flavor neutral.
  • Half-and-half or heavy cream: For ultra-rich texture, a little of these substitutes can replace milk.

Syrup Substitutes For Color And Flavor:

Red Layer:
  • Strawberry preserves/jam: Blend into the ice cream with a splash of milk for a fruity, red hue.
  • Raspberry syrup or puree: Brings bold color and tart flavor.
  • Pomegranate juice concentrate: Mix for both color and a unique twist.
Blue Layer:
  • Blueberry preserves/jam: Blend for vibrant blue and sweet, fresh taste.
  • Natural food coloring: Use along with vanilla ice cream and a touch of blueberry puree if needed.
  • Butterfly pea flower powder: A plant-based way to achieve brilliant blue without artificial coloring.

Whipped Cream Alternatives:

  • Coconut whipped cream: Dairy-free and easy to find at most stores.
  • Almond milk or soy-based whipped topping: Popular non-dairy options.
  • Whipped aquafaba: Whip the liquid drained from canned chickpeas with sugar for a vegan topping.

Toppings:

  • Natural sprinkles: Look for dye-free, allergen-friendly options.
  • Crushed freeze-dried strawberries or blueberries: Sprinkle on top for color and crunch.
  • Fresh fruit pieces: Add strawberries and blueberries as a colorful, healthy garnish.
